How to get started in CB radio?
What equipment do I need (eg power supplies, microphones etc) do I need to get started with CB radio? PLease bear in mind that I am a COMPLETE noob, and so links on how to wire it all up and use it would help.
ThanksHow to get started in CB radio?
CB radio operators are generally very rude, and use foul language. They disregard rules and regulations..
If you still want to get into it, then buy a mobile radio, and an antenna. Hook it up to your car and.... uh... get to the experience. The microphone that comes with your radio will be fine. How to get started in CB radio?
1. Decide on where you want to be with it a year, three, five years from now. If you're just wanting to cruise around town, $40 will get you a great radio, another $20 will get you a decent mobile antenna, another $25 for an SWR meter. Hook it directly to the battery for best results, don't use a cigarette lighter or fuse block. If you're wanting to exploit radio to the craziest extent possible, start thinking about amateur radio. If you want to risk FCC intervention %26amp; fines, then a tower, beam, amplifier, and annoying toys are for you.
2. Assuming plain old CB rules for you, decide on mobile or base station setup. For a base station, you'll need to plan things out with coaxial cable, type and placement of the antenna, power supply, and of course the CB itself. You'll need to decide whether you want AM or SSB, instant WX, etc. Power mikes aren't really necessary.
3. When it's installed, spend some time just listening to the conversations instead of jumping in and sounding like a noob. How to get started in CB radio?
I would see first if CB is something you want to get into, and if CB will do what you want it to do.
I would first put an ad on craigslist or such, seeing if there is a used system you can buy.
go to a truck stop. there is usually a CB store inside or nearby. they can get you set up with an installed system.

I have a CB Radio, How can I make it a base radio?
How can I power my E.F. Johnson 123A CB Radio without installing it into the car?I have a CB Radio, How can I make it a base radio?
you can buy a regulated power supply for home use. Make sure it is at least 12-13 volt power supply. You will also need some sort of base cb antenna.

There isn't any way you can hook up your ipod to your cb radio for PA output. You can however, turn your cb to PA and play your ipod through it by holding the ipod speaker or headphones near the cb microphone. How do i hook up an ipod to a PA on a CB radio?
Yes. If you can adapt the mic input on your CB radio to the smaller IPod jack size you should be good to go.How do i hook up an ipod to a PA on a CB radio?
they make adapters for that kind of stuff..you can go to Wal-Mart or Radio Shack and get one

Is there any kind of tape or velcro you can use to hold a cb radio in a car?
Im trying to mount a cb radio in front of the passenger seat and i dont want to make holesIs there any kind of tape or velcro you can use to hold a cb radio in a car?
3M has some red mounting tape that will do the job. It's ten times as strong as regular sticky tape. You can also use the 2 inch industrial Velcro. I use that stuff where I used to bolt things down.

Will installing a CB radio in a brand new Toyota void the warranty?
will installing a CB radio in a brand new Toyota void the warranty also when i buy can i have the dealer install it do dealers do that? Will installing a CB radio in a brand new Toyota void the warranty?
Might void the warranty of the vehicle if you alter the dashboard or mess up the electronics while installing. Best thing to do is mount it under the dashboard and hook it up to the cigarette lighter.

Do I need to purchase an antenna along with a car cb radio?
I am looking to buy a car cb radio and I wasn't sure if I needed to buy an antenna with it in order for it to work.Do I need to purchase an antenna along with a car cb radio?
let me answer your question with a question, can a radio work without some kind of antenna?
so yes you need an antenna, and in case you were wondering you need a coax cable going from the antenna to the CB lolDo I need to purchase an antenna along with a car cb radio?
you really dont need it just get an deck that plays radio stations hope this helps you out:PDo I need to purchase an antenna along with a car cb radio?
For a CB radio to work, you need a CB antenna to go along with it. The antenna also needs to be turned to work properly. This requires the use of an SWR (sanding wave ratio) meter that will work for CB frequencies (approx. 26 - 27 MHz). Some shops that sell CB antennas will do this. Some auto shops too.
There are a number of different kinds of antennas. 102" whips work the best, but they are the most unwieldy. Center and base loaded antennas are more common. They can come has roof, gutter or trunk or mag-mount configurations. Some have a more or less permanent base and an easy twist off antenna portion (like K40 antennas).flyff car battery

Could you communicate across Atlantic Ocean on CB Radio?
From the Rock of Gibraltar to New York City is there a civilian CB radio with that type of range?. I keep thinking curvature of the earth would cause interference.Could you communicate across Atlantic Ocean on CB Radio?
It is possible under certain conditions. There is a phenomenon called "skip" where the radio waves bounce off of the ionosphere and can shoot hundreds even thousands of miles. That happens fairly often but it is unpredictable. Several years ago I was talking to a friend of mine and suddenly heard people speaking spanish. A few minutes later they were gone. I will not pretend to understand all of the mechanics of skip, but it has something to do with the sun, you can research it on your own if you want to. In short, yes it is possible to communicate over very long distances with a cb.Could you communicate across Atlantic Ocean on CB Radio?
CB radio operates on 40 channels at 27 MHz. The Amateur Radio Service 10 meter bad is at 28 MHz. For purposes of considering the usability over a given path, there is no difference.
I have confirmed contacts with Italian Amateur Radio Stations on 10 meters several times over the last few years. Thus it is possible that contact could be made between Gibraltar and New York.
Problems: This path would not be reliable for scheduled or repeated communication. In addition, FCC regulations prohibit the use of CB radios to make contact with stations outside the USA. Thus, even though it is possible, it is neither reliable nor legal.Could you communicate across Atlantic Ocean on CB Radio?
Actually, your signal can bounce off of the atmosphere, and yes, I believe you could easily contact New York by cb, but it would be spiratic. It's also illegal to transmit with more than 4 watts in the states. Plus, even if you can bounce your signal, it's called skip over here, you're not allowed to knowingly contact someone more than 155 miles away via cb here in the states. It's all because of the fashist fcc, but noone really cares what the rules are, there are many people who break them. Noone really monitors that stuff.
No.

My new 1970s CB radio only picks up 1 channel. Are all CB radios digital or something?
I just got this NEW 1970s CB radio from my Grand father. I went and got a antenna and i can only hear one channel of people talking, is that normal? Is it the antenna? Or are most CB Radios digital now?My new 1970s CB radio only picks up 1 channel. Are all CB radios digital or something?
depending on your home location (and the quality of the CB antenna and correct SWR), CB's popularity have decreased considerably.
channel 19 might be the only channel active in your area.
first make sure the SWR is OK, if it is, then in your area, not much is going on in the CB worldMy new 1970s CB radio only picks up 1 channel. Are all CB radios digital or something?
you probably have a 23 channel cb. the 1 i have is a uniden 40 channel. most of the cbs today are 40 channels and digital. even if you do have a 23 you still should pick up more then 1 channel. make sure you put a meter on your antenna to match it to your radio or you will blow up the radio. i really love my cb in my car, especially when i,am driving on the interstate. i had 1 since 1977. it sounds to me like some of the finals are out of the radio. which means you need another radio but keep that 1 to remember your grandfather. My new 1970s CB radio only picks up 1 channel. nope. CB's have always been an analog rf system. ch 19 is the truckers ch for most. lots of idiots on there if ya ask me. very rarely is there anything said that is of any importance.
not much on/channel 19 is still the truckers

Do I need a VHF or CB radio?
In order to talk to an air plane from the ground you would need a VHF radio rather than an CB? And of you would have to have one of each one on the plane and another on the ground.Do I need a VHF or CB radio?
OK, if you are talking to someone from the ground to an airplane privately, you can CB, VHF, UHF, HF, the new family band radios, or two cups and a real long piece of string.
Yes, you would need one radio on the airplane and one on the ground.
VHF is used to communicate to ATC. I don't know what you are trying to do, so to answer this question we'd need more info.
Yes we use VHF radios on aircraft. Not Citizens Band (CB)
and yes for a pilot to communicate with a ground station there must be a VHF radio on board the aircraft as well as one in the ground station, %26amp; in order to communicate each must be tuned to the same frequency.Do I need a VHF or CB radio?
you need a VHF AM airband radio, be carefull though cos there are only certain frequencies you can speak on. you can buy them from companies such as icom. as long as theres a standard VHf on the airplane you can just tune into that frequency and chat away
The person on the ground and the person in the air both need to have a transmitter/receiver that operates on the same frequency. You have a choice of solutions; two are listed below:
- VHF aviation band radios are already installed in all aircraft (except certain ultralights or sport aircraft). You can buy a hand held radio (www.sportys.com or www.icom.com) for the person on the ground. Handhelds have less power, but you likely want to talk to someone reasonably close anyway. You will want to be particularly careful about what frequency you use. You will want to stay off local ATC, weather, unicom, and flightwatch frequencies (to name a few), and most of all, STAY OFF "GUARD" 121.5 MHz, but your pilot friend and you can select a frequency. I lent a spare handheld to a friend whom I would visit often. Before taking off, I'd call by phone to give a rough ETA and would have her monitor the local unicom frequency. When she heard me call in at 5 miles out, she'd jump in the car and pick me up at the airport :-)
- Cell phones - these are great since just about everybody has one. You are supposed to turn them off in powered aircraft (may interfere with navigation devices) but it is noteworthy that you can buy aviation headset adaptors to plug into cell phones. We used them all the time in gliders (where you didn't have to contend with engine noise). Of course, the ground based antennas for the individual cells in the network were designed for ground-based users so the aerial coverage can be a bit spotty.
I'm told that the networks get a bit miffed if you are using a cell phone in a plane as you switch from cell to cell quickly and it provides an additional switching burden. That wasn't much of a problem in a glider (60-80mph) which is car highway speed, but it is pretty obvious in a powered aircraft at 150 knots or faster.Do I need a VHF or CB radio?
I would like to say there are three methods of communication possible.
HF communication
It provides wide range communication its is operated within the range of 3MHz-30MHz. Pilot uses this mainly for getting recorded meteorology readings of designation airports. Rarely communicates.
VHF communication
It provides short range communication. VHF spectrum falls within the range of 30Mhz-300MHz. This is method is used for communicating to ATC for landing, parking , taxing and take-off. The operational range falls between 118.0Mhz to 132.0Mhz for commercial aircrafts, which are Amplitude Modulated (AM wave). Emergency frequency is 121.5Mhz also known as International Air Distress (IAD) and for military aircraft the emergency frequency also known as Military Air Distress (MAD) is 243.0MHz.
Cockpit-Ground Communication
This is a headset %26amp; mic jack. located at the ground crew contol panel which is located in a place nearby the front wheel. When the audio control panel (ACP) in cockpit is enabled to ground, cockpit and ground crew can communicate through this while towing, engine run up, any testing needs supervision from outside.
Public are not allowed to operate on the frequency spectrum specified to aviation communications.

What is a good cb radio base antenna?
Hello
I am getting a cb radio for my house and I don't have too much experience with this stuff so I want a simple easy to set up (and not too big) Cb base antenna. I would rather not get a big huge one thats a pain to ajust. I would rather get a easy to use antenna that I can take down easily. What would you recomend? What is a good cb radio base antenna?
Go check it at any electronic shop.
you can get a solarcon ant. for about 70.00 bucks a 20 ' section of chain link fence top rail 20.00 bucks and any cb radio . try ebay for a base station with side bands. its alot of ,fun. lots of p,,,,,eople out here still talk. good luck. What is a good cb radio base antenna?
strange question, i was told that with the onset of mobile phones cb radios were out of fashion, go to a place like radio shack they are up with that thing
Don't get a moonraker if you want to take it down easy. Instead get just a plain old Ground plane omni directional antenna. What is a good cb radio base antenna?
moon raker with a rotor or cheaper an omni directional antenna

I need to know how to make a PA system work on my cb radio?
I have a cb radio with the PA function i just need to know what type of input to use for the radio to the speaker. Will a powerhorn work for the PA systemI need to know how to make a PA system work on my cb radio?
Radio Shack sells an 8-ohm all-weather speaker that you can mount under the hood or in the grill. Just run the two wires connected to the speaker through the firewall and in to where the CB is mounted, and plug it in to the receptacle marked PA. You may have to purchase the male connector for the end of the wires, you can check when you buy the speaker. The other receptacle is usually for internal speaker. Be careful running the wires so they don't interfere with anything in the engine compartment, and don't get in trouble with local law enforcement. Have fun, good luck with it.

Is there anything you can do if a cb radio signal is coming through on the tv?
Our super annoying next door neighbor has a cb radio in his house. It used to not be so bad, but recently it is so loud that we cant watch tv when he's talking. And now it completely freezes the screen so you cant even watch if you want to. My mom said there's nothing that can be done, but there has to be something. Please helpIs there anything you can do if a cb radio signal is coming through on the tv?
It sounds like your neighbor has intalled a power amplifier on his CB. These are illegal because they tend to cause all kinds of interference. I don't suppose talking to him about it would do any good. A call to the FCC should get him a letter about this. You might have to be persistant in calling the FCC but they should at least send a letter. If he pays any attention to the letter is debatable. It's worth a try. As the other answer suggests, a filter on your cable may help the situation. Is there anything you can do if a cb radio signal is coming through on the tv?
This could be front-end overload due to illegal amplification of your neighbor's radio signal. Try putting a high-pass filter where the signal comes in. These are readily available at electronics stores.

Do you have to tune antennas for a cb radio if you disconnect them from the mounts?
I just got a cb radio and antenna mounts, it says to tune the antennas for the best performance, but i was wondering if i take the antennas off the mounts do i have to retune themDo you have to tune antennas for a cb radio if you disconnect them from the mounts?
Find a shop that has a SWR.They can tune it for best range.Placement of antennae has a lot to do with range so ask them if your not sure.Once it's tuned, you won't need to do anything unless you replace mast.
um how would u tune them??? u just hook them up....tuning means point them in the right direction.....which means moving ur truck/car to a better spot if u aren't getting good signal...Do you have to tune antennas for a cb radio if you disconnect them from the mounts?
you don,t have to retune it as long as you don,t move the stinger. that,s the antenna. once you tune the antenna to the radio you can take it off and put it back on and the swr won,t change. i had a cb since 1977. you can tell by my name on here what my handle is.
Once the antenna has been tuned you will not have to do it every time. Fine a good CB radio shop they will do this for you at a small charge. If you can not find a CB shop check your local Ham radio operator they can point you in the right direction.Do you have to tune antennas for a cb radio if you disconnect them from the mounts?
Generally, tuning means to adjust the length of the antenna so it is the right length for the frequencies where you will be operating. Removing the antenna from the mount or the mount from the vehicle shouldn't be a problem. If the antenna rod becomes loose from the base or center coils (not a problem with 102" whips) you should retune it again with your SWR meter.
Hint: Tune the antenna to channel 17. It should provide a better SWR throughout the band rather than turning it for the exact center of the band which is ch 19.

How do I suppress noise in my Harley Davidson motorcycle cb radio?
I have a 2000 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic with built in CB radio. It's very quiet with the engine off. When I start the motor I get a wining noise. How can I suppress some of that noise? How do I suppress noise in my Harley Davidson motorcycle cb radio?
If this just recently started you might have a loose connection. Also there is a noise filter in the wire that brings power to the radio. Perhaps it has gone bad and needs to be replaced.
Whining is noise coming in from alternator on power line.
1: check all connections, including antenna.
2: install an RF choke or filter in power line.
DO NOT add anything between your radio and antenna.
Clicking noise that increases with acceleration is from ignition.
Check all plug and coil wires for clean, tight connections.
Use resistor type spark plugs. How do I suppress noise in my Harley Davidson motorcycle cb radio?
check grounds - its picking up the motor noise
turn the squelch knob to the right until it stops. How do I suppress noise in my Harley Davidson motorcycle cb radio?
You can buy a filter that goes between the CB and the coax to filter out ignition and alt. noise. Try the Harley dealer or Radio shack. good luck
You can put an RF-gain filter on the power line. You may need resistor spark plugs to stop the hiss sound.
Change the plugs find a resistor type plugs
Remove the unit from the fairing and either give it to somebody who rides a Honda Oldwing or toss it in the nearest trashcan. What the hell do you need a CB radio on a Harley for.

How far can a CB radio transmit?
I am going to get a CB radio for my birthday and I was wondering how far it can go. (the specific model is "Cobra 18 WX ST II) and I live in western Pennsylvania. How far can a CB radio transmit?
I used to have a cb in my car, and I used to talk to truckers 30 to 40 miles away.
It also depends on what type of antenna you will be using. Use a cheap magnet mount and you'll get miles or so.How far can a CB radio transmit?
How far? It depends on quite a few things mostly having to do with your antenna, but you can reliably expect a few miles.

Is it wierd that my 21 year old brother has a cb radio in his honda car and talks to random people that he does not know? It scares me that he thinks it is a hobby when he drives. Should I get him help?Is it weird that my 21 year old brother has a cb radio in his Honda? hmm i wonder why he is single?
nah hes just at a phase where he thinks that dumb stuff is cool. later on hes going to think that was gay and was a waste of money lol.
No, it's not weird. Lots of people are into CBs. It's an easy and fun hobby (if not expensive); they're easily customizable, and it's a challenge to see how far away you can reach out with them.
WHy does it scare you that he talks on it while he drives? So do truck drivers, and everyone else with a CB in their vehicles. It's not like talking on a cell phone. You don't have to look down, dial a number or anything like that, you just press the button and talk. Other than that it's no different than talking to someone in the car with you. It's not pressed to your ear, so you don't zone out the way people on cell phones do. Think about it - you never hear about car accidents involving someone who was talking on a CB.
Not only that, but I think it's probably very, very unlikely that he's single because he's got a CB. Lots of guys have CBs in their cars or trucks. My own husband (and some of his friends) each have about three or four of them. Just because you've deemed it "uncool" doesn't mean that it actually is. Just let him live his life!Is it weird that my 21 year old brother has a cb radio in his Honda? hmm i wonder why he is single?
Ryan, its obvious that you don't know about hobbies. CB radio is a hobby, it is made not only as a base station piece of equipment, but also as a mobile unit. It is made this way so that you can install it in a motor vehicle, after the installation, you can then talk to anyone that has the same hobby. CB radio has been around the UK for many years, and I can remember it in the 70's when it was illegal to own a CB radio, and later when it was made legal, if it had SSB on it. (Single Side Band). this mode was used by many enthusiasts to talk to many overseas stations. Yes Ryan, there were stations using CB's on the continent too, and especially America. Now days, many of the old users have graduated to Amateur Radio which has been going for much longer than CB's and the amateurs have been responsible for your modern day radio's TVs etc. Without them experimenting You would not have had the stuff you take for granted now. The only thing I can ask is "Does your brother have a hands free microphone for his radio"? It would be very much safer if he had. Maybe if you took the exam to be a radio 'Ham' you could then convert your brother also. Being a 'Ham' is a very rewarding hobby where you can help others in need and also have help given you if needed. You will find that being a 'Ham' is extremely envigorating, providing you join the right club. You will do all sorts of events every year as the club I belong to does. I've been a 'Ham' for about 30 years and still enjoy it very much, I have even progressed to teaching others the Morse Code. You should try it, you might like it.
What your brother is doing is no different than what we are doing right now, at this moment. We are communicating with complete strangers, right?
At least with a CB you have a pretty good idea that you are actually talking to a male or a female.
Communicating with a voice instead of the written word has a lot more realistic meaning. Humor comes across a lot better in speech than in writing and voice inflection certainly cannot be heard in the written word.
So, your brother really has one up on the rest of us, in my opinion.10 4.Is it weird that my 21 year old brother has a cb radio in his Honda? hmm i wonder why he is single?
I don't think it is weird. It is kind of neat to see people that don't have any social anxieties about talking to other people. Now he may get into trouble anyway with this hobby if he is interfering with the trucking channels. He will get over it so don't worry about it. He's single because he drive a Honda not because of the cb... but I guess I am biased!
Just wait till an emergency happenes, or your cell phone dont work.
Then you will be very happy he has a CB radio.

Can I run a standard digital 40channel CB radio off a computer's USB ports?
I want to know if I can use my common unmodified CB radio (12v mobile compact, maybe 4amps max) off a computer's USB ports as a power source. Is it legal for me to use my cb radio on channels 9 and 19?
I have a cb radio and someone I know said it's against the law to communicate with truckers on channels 9 or 19 any thoughts? Is it legal for me to use my cb radio on channels 9 and 19?
Channel 9 is designated for emergencies only but 19 is open to anyone who wants to use it, it would not be illegal for you to use either if you follow proper protocol.{}Is it legal for me to use my cb radio on channels 9 and 19?
In the US, anyone can use a CB radio. No license required in the US. You can use any channel you want. Channel 9 should only be used for emergencies and channel 19 is typically a common channel for truckers and other vehicles to communicate on the road.
You can talk to all the truckers you want to, assuming they want to talk back!

How to hack a CB Radio for instant drive thru comedy!?
Does anyone here know the proper way to hack into Dru thru frequencies using a CB radio? I fully understand the repercussions of this by FCC Standards and quite frankly I could care less. If you could contribute to this bore fellow I would be immensely grateful, removing a crystal from a microwave or toaster is by all means fake. NO PEACHING OF FCC LAWS HERE!How to hack a CB Radio for instant drive thru comedy!?
This will not work. CB frequency range is in the HF range or 26.965MHz to 27.405MHz. Most drive-thru's use a radio system that operates in the VHF range or 150MHz. There is no easy way to modify a cb to talk on drive-thru channels unless you practically take out the board and components of the cb and stick a VHF radio inside the cb case. Also, their radio systems use CTCSS. CB's use AM(amplitude modulations) while drive-thru radio systems use FM(frequency modulation).

Can i use a regular set of speakers for a PA on a cb radio?
instead of buying a pa speaker (i cant find them in any stores) can i use an old set of computer speakers? if i cut the power cable and attach them to power and ground, the cb radio uses a 3.5mm jack for speaker output. maybe even get fancy and hook the speakers to a switch so they are not constantly on when the car is running.
would this work? Can i use a regular set of speakers for a PA on a cb radio?
Yes you can . Most CB's require you use an 8 ohm , minumum 5 watt speaker though.
Most of todays speakers are 4 ohms and it may be too much load for the output.
There is a mono 3.5mm jack on the back of most CB's to plug this into.
If you have a pair of 4 ohm speakers you can wire them in series to get an 8 ohm load.
I would not try using the powered computer speakers because they do not have noise filtration built into thier amplifiers that car amplifiers do and you will most likely hear engine noise because of this.
I would read the specifications sheet on your speakers before you begin and if it does'nt list the impeadance(ohms), use a volt / ohm meter to determine this. Can i use a regular set of speakers for a PA on a cb radio?

How do you install a CB Radio into your car or are they only designed for rigs? (I have a Cobra.)?
I used to drive a rig for 3 months so I should know this already but - I would like to install a CB radio into my car. I work as a courier and it helps to have a CB to know traffic situations that the news doesn't report. In any case, I bought a cobra and I have no idea how to install it. I thought it would be something you plugged into the cigarette lighter outlet but on the back, all I have are a red and black raw cables. Can anyone help? How do you install a CB Radio into your car or are they only designed for rigs? (I have a Cobra.)?
Red cable is positive, black cable is ground. You can but cigarette plug from Radio shack and attach the wires to that so it is more convenient than hard wiring it.
Next it the antenna, you may just want to get a magnetic one that sticks to the car roof. After that all you need to do is match the antenna and the radio with an SWF meter that is also available at Radio Shack.
you must have already purchased one so now if you haven't got an antenna, get that also. hard mount the radio for easy access and control do what the manufacturer says to for power ---then---here comes the important part, take the car with the radio installed and if the antenna is hard mounted have it in place, to a CB dealership and have them set the VISWR. this has something to do with the length of the antenna and cable you have on the radio and if this VISWR is not set correctly one of two things an happen, either you can not transmit as far, or each time you do there is an amount of surge back into the radio and that can damage it. so put the system in the car and before trying it take it to somebody that can adjust it before you try it out----then enjoyHow do you install a CB Radio into your car or are they only designed for rigs? red wire goes to a positive wire or in fuse box black wire is the ground wire hook it to something metal on the dashboard or you can buy a adapter to plug in to cigarette lighter
The positive and negative cables on the back allow a much better way of supplying power than a cigarette adaptor. Just run the red wire from your fuse block (choose a higher amp, 20+ circuit, NOT THE RADIO), then ground the black as close to your instalation point as possible, but take care not to ground it too close to the radio. How do you get more power to a Home CB radio?
I recently hooked up a Midland cb radio, got it all going in my room, and I can't hear a thing, and when I transmitt the lights on CB dim. I was thinking that I'm not getting enough power to the CB, but I have 12V going into it. Is there anything I can do to get more power? I have this hooked up in my room, not a car. ThanksHow do you get more power to a Home CB radio?
Well, the first thing to check is the coax going to your antenna (check for good solder connections on each end - not the crimp on connectors ) - also check the SWR
2nd, is to have a GOOD base antenna (not one of those short indoor antennas)
3rd, is getting a larger power cord going to your CB
4th, is getting a larger power supply - 13.8 Volts regulated, and at least 5 to 7 ampsHow do you get more power to a Home CB radio?
Wow - didn't know CB even existed anymore. I would recommend checking at an amateur radio/ham sites to get best answers. How do you get more power to a Home CB radio?
You probably need a power supply with a little more amperage. Most cb's should take 7-10 amps.
A CB typically used around 2.5 amps. Your manual will tell you what yours uses. You want a power supply that is not straining to supply this current. A decent 4 amp, regulated power supply should do nicely. The power leads between the CB and the power supply shouldn't be too much more than an arms length.
You might also want to check your antenna system with an SWR meter. A high reading (bad match) causes the radio to reduce output power. Your radio might be cutting down all power to accomplish this.

How do i hook up my cb radio to a speaker and play the PA system?
i bought a cb radio from walmart and it says PA on the front of it. i dont know how to hook it it up. any help?
How do i hook up my cb radio to a speaker and play the PA system?
First you'll need a PA speaker. It should plug right into the back of the CB in the PA jack. Do you need help with choosing a good antenna? If you need further assistance email me.
You can get PA speakers for CB radios at Radioshack and most CB shops.
Here are some examples:

http://www.wearecb.com/store/pa-speaker-鈥?/a>How do i hook up my cb radio to a speaker and play the PA system?
It probably has a mini socket on it marked "PA" where you plug in a wire connected to a speaker. Use an all-weather reflex horn speaker. Normal speakers can't handle the harsh environment outside. When you use the PA function of the CB radio it will sound much better if you also have a powered microphone. The stock mics are terrible and weak. The Astatic D104 mic is what you want. Get one at a Ham radio shop and have them wire it up for your radio since plug schemes vary widely from one brand to another. Be careful to not key up the radio with it on CB function without an antenna or a "dummy load" on it or the RF output will burn out in little time. The radio itself needs to be connected to ground and positive to power it up. You can attach it permanently or use a slide bracket you can use to take the radio in and out of the car so it doesn't disappear when you park somewhere. How do i hook up my cb radio to a speaker and play the PA system?
well i dont know if you want to hook up it up as a CB radio as well, if so you need to get an antenna. if you want good reception look at wilson magnet mount antennas. i can go much further into detail but i dont know if its what you want.
What ya do to get the pa working, is hook up the power to the CB if it plug into the cig lighter their ya go, if not then you gotta run the red wire to the battery,(ou probably need more wire to extend what came with it, STAY AT THE SAME GUAGE WIRE. DONT GO SMALLER) and the black wire to anywhere grounded, you could go to the battery, or any bolt going through the car, or most other metal in the car.
youve now got power. but you need a speaker, ebay has a bunch of little 12 watt speakers, which do fit under the grills with a little fenegailing of most cars. or you can get a nice powered speaker, but look into that later...
you will need to get a pa horn with a 3.5mm jack on the end, or wire one up that you got at radio shack, and plug it in the back (run the wire nice and hidden) and youve now got a PA system
these pa systems dont work too loud, you wont talk to anyone when your moing, but you will when you are stopped at traffic, at a light, a sign or what ever. dont expect to be heard from too far.
also about the mic. you do not want to use a powered mic, it will turn your audio into a garbled over modulated mess. a power mic is GREAT for Cb specially the d104, but not to use for pa unless you turn it way off... my buddies ive hooked pa systems up for, all use the stock mics and they sound fine. a better mic never improves the sound... the speakers only sound so good....
good luck

CB Radio usage in Washington State and are they legal?
With the cell phone law in place, does that mean hand held devices such as the reciever to a CB Radio are illegal as well? Also if legal, are they completely illegal to drivers with an intermediate lisence?CB Radio usage in Washington State and are they legal?
CB radios are LEGAL in every state. Some states tried to ban the use of them while driving, but the FCC would not let them. They are considered a safety device in your vehicle. There is a huge difference between talking on a cell phone and talking on a cb. As far as having an intermediate license.... for that reason your state might restrict the use of a cb. Once you get your regular license you will be ok. Check with your local motor vehicle department about the use of a cb with an intermediate license.CB Radio usage in Washington State and are they legal?
Please research the laws in your state. The website for the legal system in your specific location is the best bet.
Chnaces Are CB radios are illegal. Only Amater radio operators as a whole are granted a waiver, as well as those who use a radio in the performance of their jobs, with a radio issued by their companies.CB Radio usage in Washington State and are they legal?
Well, I drove around Washington at age 16 with a CB radio.. and that was not that long ago
I say screw the laws.

Can a CB radio communicate with a VHF Radio?
I am wondering to see if I could use my CB radio to communicate with my friend who has a VHF radio. Can a CB radio communicate with a VHF Radio?
No. The standard VHF radio works in the 150 MHz area and uses FM. A CB works in the 27 MHz area and uses AM. The VHF radio won't be able to communicate the the CB because of both conditions. Neither radio can operate in the frequency range of the other and neither radio can work on the other modulation. This mean the VHF can't send or receive AM and the CB can't send or receive FM.

Are there any tricks for cb radio antennas?
I recently put a cb radio in my truck.
When me and a friend of mine tested it out he couldn't hear me and I could BARELY hear him. We were less than a mile away. Is there anything I can do to my antennas to fix my problem? Foil or anything like that? Are there any tricks for cb radio antennas?
You need to have the SWR set on the antenna. SWR stands for "Standing Wave Reflection" and relates to the amount of reflection your transmission gets off the body of the vehicle back into the antenna. You'll need an SWR meter, some CB's have them built in, to set the antenna. The procedures for setting it will vary depending on the type of antenna. Once you have an SWR meter, let me know what type of antenna you have and where it's mounted and I can explain further. If you get a seperate SWR meter not built into the radio you will also need a short 3 ft ant cable to connect it inline with the antenna cable at the back of the radio.
Continueing to use the CB or trying foil will result in damage to the CB so don't...until the SWR is set.dmv hours p411

Can I install a cb radio in my room?
I just like herin the people talk on the radio. I want to be able to plug it in to my wall. Is this possible? Anybody recomend a special type of cb? I think Im gonna get one of ebay used. Can I install a cb radio in my room?
You can purchase a portable handheld model. They look similar to the walkie-talkies kids play with, but have more channels and better range. New units run $50-$100+ but you may be able to find a good used one at a yard sale, flea market ,or Ebay. A base unit would offer better range and reception but even used ones tend to go for more than your budget allows.
some on Ebay

but you can search portable CB for others
It's possible to hook up a CB outside a vehicle that's supposed to be in a vehicle. But why? The power source is different.
You want a CB made for a home which has an atenna built in or can except an external one. Look-up "Home Based CB's" on Ebay, I'm sure you'll find some.
Good Luck. Can I install a cb radio in my room?
If you use a regular unit you'll need an ac adapter. They run on 12 volts. Antenna you can hang anywhere outside. You could also go the main route and get a base unit, they're built for home use.
no!Can I install a cb radio in my room?
I did this before and i was a lot of fun. my recommendation is to get a decent CB. You will spend lots of hours chatting so might as well have a good 'ol time. you will need the following:
1.) an antenna - the bigger the larger range you will get....you can get one from radioshack
2.) a 12 volt power inverter ( you will need this to power up the CB and connect it to the wall.)
Yes you can you will need an out side antenna for best results I had one long ago it was fun , hope this helps,
Sure you can. You need an antenna, a 12 volt power inverter, and a CB. You could just use a car type antenna mounted in your room, but the reception won't be great. If your parents/building owner don't mind, you should look in to getting a large mast antenna that will poke up over your roof (and your neighbors' roofs).
As for which CB to get, a lot of people will probably recommend a large rig, but really, just for casual use, any reasonably-priced radio will work. eBay will definitely be your friend here. I like the mid-range Cobras for a radio, and 12 volt inverters are a dime a dozen (keep your eyes open at garage sales.)
120 volt ac units are known as "base" cb radios.. At one time I was into CB's pretty heavy.
You will need an outside ant. mounted on a poll or in a tree.. The antron 18' long ant. is about the best for a simply base unit.
My base radio was a cobra brand (can't remember the # though)
If you just want to play around with it some then you could use a car CB.. They make power supplys to plug into the 120 volt outlet then hook a 12 volt radio up to it.. A power supply to run a norm car cb would be around $35..
A good ant. is still needed though.. When I 1st started I modd'ed a car 'whip' ant and mounted it on the top side of my house like you would a TV ant.

How to stop interference from a cb radio?
We have a neighbor that has a cb radio and he is interfeing with out television, computers, phones and so forth. We however contacted the FCC and our local authority but however got no response from the FCC cause they say its something our local authorities have to take care of. ANd the local authorities say its up to the FCC. Does anyone know how we can interfere the cb radio signalsHow to stop interference from a cb radio?
You need a Transmitting device of Some form(Maybe a Power generator-that is NOT magnetically shielded)
Turn that on near the Transmission point and that should do the trick!
Or a RF radio controlled remote unit(Like you can use with Model Aircraft-That generates a Lot of Interference!!
Alternatively, get a handheld CB and Key the Microphone when the neighbor is trying to talk!(Because you are so close,he will soon get fed up!)mr tire vegan diet

Do I need an antenna for my CB Radio to use my PA?
I have recently bought a CB Radio and a PA Speaker. Do I need an antenna connected to my CB to use my PA? Will it ruin my CB Radio if I use it without an antenna or just not get any reception?Do I need an antenna for my CB Radio to use my PA?
If you want to just use your PA, you do not need an antenna. You're not broadcasting anything, so there's no need for it. However, if you want to use the CB to transmit and receive, you'll need the antenna.
It will not ruin your CB if you use the PA without the antenna.

I have just installed a CB radio into my little s-10 pickup and i get interference from my wind shield wippers and my heater fans. when i have those things on i get a lot of static and i have to turn the squelch way up to get rid of it. is it just that its picking up sound waves form these items, or is it something else and is there a way to fix it?I have just installed a CB radio into my little s-10 pickup and i get interference from my wind shield wippers?
got to your local Electronics store and buy a Noise filter to wire in that should fix it . However it may be as simple as you may need to move your ground wire on your cb radio.I have just installed a CB radio into my little s-10 pickup and i get interference from my wind shield wippers?
A noise filter put in line with the positive lead would be the first step. You could also wire your power leads directly to the battery. This technique is used to eliminate alternator whine and other power line interference. It also allows the CB to work independently of the ignition. If you do this, make sure you have fuses on both power (positive and negative) leads.

Is there a CB radio for an auto that also has a police scanner function?
I'm thinking of adding a CB radio to my Jeep, but also wondering if there is a radio with a police scanner function? Is there a CB radio for an auto that also has a police scanner function?
you can ask for bear reports and 90% of the time if a driver passes a smokey or county mountie they'll let everybody know where he's at and which side he's taking pitchers of. so a scanner isn't really necessary. so i'd just get a good galaxy like a 949 or 959 difference is the frequency country for the most part. that's what i'd go with. they're full sized radios and they're excelent radios. cobra is hit and miss peiod they're not that great to be honset. some are good out of the box and others only make good paper weights or door stops. however i would recommend staying away from the little compact radios...anybody and everybody on the interstate will be able to key over you and that's a royal pain. at least if you get a full sized radio making 4 watts you're not going to have too much of a problem getting keyed over. so that's what i'd reccomend doing but that's just me. just remember it's better to spend the money and get something that's going to last as opposed to getting something cheap and having to replace it.Is there a CB radio for an auto that also has a police scanner function?
no but run the cb on channel 19 the truck drivers will tell you where the cops are

Do i need an SWR meter to calibrate my CB radio if it has one built in?
i have an older model Cobra 29ltd classic. It has an SWR meter on it. I read Cb radios must be tuned with an SWR meter. Is this the same thing that is on my radio? Do i need to buy something else to calibrate it?Do i need an SWR meter to calibrate my CB radio if it has one built in?
yes the swr meter in the radio is the same thing as any other modest swr meter
no you do not need to buy anything else
just set the meter to Cal - key the mike and quickly adj the needle to the little dot past cal, let off the key - set the switch back to swr, key the mic and read the meter, if it's below 2, the swr is okDo i need an SWR meter to calibrate my CB radio if it has one built in?
Assuming that the radios in good working order. It should work fine. Yes, it鈥檚 the same thing. You鈥檙e tuning the carrier wave to the antenna. Make sure your antenna base is grounded properly.jayco tagalog translator

Amateur Radio has organised plans to work with other agencies in the event of a disaster. See http://www.arrl.org/emergency-communicat鈥?/a> for the US and http://www.raynet-uk.net/ for the UK. In some countries such as Australia there are similar organisations for CB http://www.acrem.org.au/ Both CB and Amateur Radio have mobile and base station installations which have generators or similar in the event of major power outages.
Either will technically work.
However, Ham radio, as a collective of operators and their stations, will fare better in a disaster, because they are more organised (with ARES/Races and such, even to local clubs and such), and their bands and equipment have more capabilities than legal CB stations. Even the fact they are licensed gives them honor with the general community they live, and amongst themselves. Is a ham radio or cb radio good for emergencies?
Lare has the best answer. However, it sort of depends on the sort of emergency you have. If you're out of gas out in the middle of nowhere and your cell phone has no signal, then maybe having a CB tuck away in the trunk (like I do) could bring help to you. If you're traveling cross country with a few other cars then CB, if not FMRS, makes for a good intercom between cars. Now you just don't run out to the Radio Shack and buy an Amateur Radio. Like Lare said, you have to study and take a test and Amateur (Ham) Radio is very much self-policed. Monkey business like you hear on CB is much frowned upon. But when major whether events are wrecking havoc and Government Emergency Managers are seeking communications help, who do they call. It certainly not the CBers. Amateur Radio Operator Clubs conduct weekly training exercises for just such events and are prepared to set up shop and assist. If you're interested in learning more about Amateur Radio and getting a license, search my call sign KD5OM and you'll see my web site with information on studying for a Ham Radio License.
Amateur radio has direct ties to FEMA (RACES), Red Cross(ARES), and military (MARS) and are included in the disaster response plans of every community. Amateur radio has a long tradition of working when everything else has failed ie Katrina. While the VHF repeater is an important part of local ham communications, it is not essential. Hams have other equipment and the last weekend of June, the ARRL sponsors a national emergency communication test that does not use repeaters, established towers or commercial power. Thousands of hams in the USA and Canada participate. Many other countries have a similar annual operating event.
As to CB, it is mostly for highway travelers. No one monitors channel 9 anymore, not even the police. It might be helpful if you are outside the range of cellular towers, which is what most people use for real communication these days, including truckers. There is no organized emergency participation groups on CB anymore. REACT has mostly disbanded because of the absence of people willing to set up base stations with towers at their home, in fact many communities prohibit CB towers in contrast with ham radio whose towers are protected by federal regulation. CB is mostly a bad dream from the 1970s.
i have CB, VHF ham and HF ham radio installed in my car. they work off a solar panel so i am prepared for outages. Ham radio is a commitment that requires studying and licenses, there are no "license-free" ham radio operators. they identify themselves per regulations when operating for everyone to know, where as CB is just anonymous "handles".Is a ham radio or cb radio good for emergencies?
Cb radios will be dominant for such disaster. They use short-wave technology and setup right you can be heard for miles. Channel 9 is the emergency channel. I believe in rural areas law enforcement still listen in. I have one for permanent set up in my car along with an emergency one. I have used it once for an emergency. Highly recommeneded to get one. You can find a cheap emergency one for $20
CB would be between vehicles depending on if there was a trucker near by. Hams have repeaters and participate in storm chasing and skywarn but what if the storm knocks out their antenna or repeater.

What is the best CB radio + external speaker configuration for my money ?
I'm looking into buying a CB radio with an external speaker. I would like to know where I would find the best deal, and what brands make the best. What is the best CB radio + external speaker configuration for my money ?
Okay, I looked for a cheap CB also and heres what you need.
You need to find a CB shop who will peak and tweak. You need a cobra 19 ($34 at walmart) a little Wil antenna ($40).
Get the CB shop to peak a tweak and check SWR. Takes about 30 min. and $40ish.
Without the peak and tweak you get 2 miles. With the tweak you get 12 miles on a average day. This is the cheapest way for the best results!!What is the best CB radio + external speaker configuration for my money ?

Can I use a rubber ducky style antenna on a base station CB radio?
I want to know if I can use a rubber ducky antenna that is meant to be used on a hand held CB radio, on a base station CB for small range communications. Can I use a rubber ducky style antenna on a base station CB radio?
Radio shack used to sell. I do not know if they still do, a "back of set" CB antenna. I actually used one and it worked well for a mile or so.
The antenna (rubber duck) will work for extremely short ranges, but you need one made for CB bands.
You may wish to consider FRS, or eXRS for your communications, as they are handheld and use FM rather than noisy AM for communications. (provided you live in the USA) Europe uses FM for CB also.
It probably will work ok as long as the base station is not putting out 100 watts (illegal power). The normal power output for CB on Am is 5 watts, which would work fine. Can I use a rubber ducky style antenna on a base station CB radio?
Only if the "Rubber Ducky" antenna is specifically for the CB bands. Generally they are for VHF and UHF radios.
I wouldn't recommend it for several reasons:
1. Most handheld CB radios only put out a couple watts at the most, meaning the "rubber ducky" was also not designed for your full-power base station. In addition, if your base-station also uses SSB then you could potentially be talking about even higher RMS wattages.
2. You likely will not obtain a decent match between the antenna and base station. Those "duckies" are designed to use the handheld casing as part of the antenna stucture; you are significantly changing that. You may want to check with an SWR meter if you have one.. although for this setup I doubt your readings would be accurate anyways. You may run the risk of burning out your radios finals.
3. Your "duckie" may be placing harmful RF closer to your operating position. If you decide to use this route then you should try to keep as much distance between yourself and the antenna as possible.
I would strongly recommend trying to use something more efficient for your needs; try to place a suitable antenna outside. The results are worth it.Can I use a rubber ducky style antenna on a base station CB radio?
you can do it, but they hardly work as is on a handheld, you also need to get a connector that will go from a pl259 to what ever is on the end of your handheld.
you need to make sure it is STRAIGHT up and down, verticle as can be. thats the only chance you have of getting out,
its deff. not recommended you wont hear far at all, or get out very far, you mgiht hear people as they drive by your house..... you would be better off getting a magnet mount antenna from radio shack and sticking it to something metal or getting a metal plate sticking git out your window, and then plugging it in....

What kind of CB Radio to get in my car?
I'm looking to pick up a CB radio for my car but cant really figure out which ones are which. I know cobra and uniden are good brands but thats about it. I'm new to this. I was looking at the uniden pro520xl or the uniden pc68xl bearcat pro. I don't want to fork out more than like 120 which is why I was looking at those 2 models but again I know nothing about them. Any input or suggestions would be helpful. What kind of CB Radio to get in my car?
The only thing that you're going to need to be concerned about is the "bells and whistles" that come with the CB that you want. The transmitter part is going to be the same across the board. You may want to look for something with a built-in SWR meter, although it won't be entirely accurate. The "Delta tune" or clarifier switch is pretty much worthless for an AM setup, but a weather Channel could be handy. PA, up to you, instant Channel 9 %26amp; 19 up to you. And chrome and lights are always pretty.
Most small cb radios are the same, the difference comes in the size of your antenna. I have some old clunker cb radio in my truck and it picks up about a range of 35 miles because my antenna is freakin enormous. What kind of CB Radio to get in my car?
I've never made any comparison's, but I've always had Cobra. For the most part I have been pleased. This is the one I use in my semi: http://cobra.com/products//29-wx-nw-st-c鈥?/a>
It's adequate for what I do. Since 99.99% of the talk on the open CB is bullsh**, mine is usually off until I really need it. That is why I won't invest a whole lot into it.
Cobra and Uniden are good models. Like Marble said, get the best antenna you can, and have it matched for low SWR. Use a powered microphone to fully modulate your signal or, no matter how good the antenna or radio are, you will not have a strong voice.
One caveat: In my owner's manual (Corolla, 1998) it warns against possible interferance to the engine management computer by CB radios. I don't know what car you have, but check for that issue before you start spending money. What kind of CB Radio to get in my car?
If you are looking to save a few bucks, the pro520xl will be fine. The "meter" is pretty useless though. It does have an RF gain control like more expensive units. That helps reduce distortion from nearby, strong stations. The receiver specs for the radio are about the same for other radios. It does have more power for a PA speaker though.
If you wanted to have a few more features, skip the pc68xl and go with the pc78ltw. It can pick up NOAA weather channels, has a longer mic cord, an auto squelch (less fiddling needed). It also has a modulation meter which makes the mic gain control useful (unlike the pc68xl) and a built in SWR meter. You'll need that in tuning your antenna.
A decent antenna is important. The physically longer the antenna, the better. Go with a Wilson antenna.

Do any of you guys still talk on the CB radio?
I got a CB radio in my car a few days ago to chat on while i'm driving. Its pretty fun talking to the weirdos on the CB and you hear some interesting stuff. Any of you guys still talk on the CB?Do any of you guys still talk on the CB radio?

What does it mean when a cb radio is two way?
I am looking to buy Cobra 29-LTD 2-Way 40-Channel CB Radio. i was just wonder what the two way part means. what is the differnce between the other cb radiosWhat does it mean when a cb radio is two way?
All CB radios by definition are "Two way" which means they both receive and transmit. What does it mean when a cb radio is two way?
It Transmits and receives. What does it mean when a cb radio is two way?
all this means is it sends and recieves
Two-way means you can send and receive. Some radios are receive-only (car radios, for example) and some are send or transmit-only.
As to the "bells and whistles" or what makes this radio different from other radios, I don't know. Some truck stops have radio installation shops or electronics department managers who would know a whole lot better than I would!

What do I need for a CB radio for indoors?
I just saw this article that inspired me to learn and maybe even get a CB radio. What do you need to know to use one?? Also do they have indoor CB radios and where can I get one?? Any good hints for a beginer like me?
* dont worry about answering every QuestionWhat do I need for a CB radio for indoors?
Yes, you most definitely can operate a CB radio indoors. My grandmother uses one to talk to my uncle when he is in the area hauling. She has her equipment in her living room. Very little equipment is required.
You can find a lot of information on this topic at www.ask.com when prompted type in what do you need to operate a CB radio. The first couple of results that pop up are advertisements, but the rest are pretty good. You would probably want to start there. What do I need for a CB radio for indoors?
yes you can. you can buy a base station from internet or store. cb shop or if you have mobile unit ask local cb users. You can hook up a mobile inside with a power supply. or a battery with charger till you get one. U will also need an antenna and coax. im me i will explain and help if i can

What can happen to me if I am caught with a modded CB radio putting out 20 watts?
The CB radio is going to be mounted in my car. What can happen to me if I am caught with a modded CB radio putting out 20 watts?
Nothing, the FCC doesnt enforce it anymore. Go have fun.
But DONT go below 26 MHZ or ABOVE 27.900 or the hams will come knocking.
As far as power goes, unless your running about 20000 you wont raise any eyebrows.
If your paranoid, get LOW PASS TVI FILTER from Paradynamics, off of ebay or Copper electronics.
It will keep your radio from interfering with TV's and such.
(Think condom for your radio)
It will not degrade your performance.
Ok, you can pick me as best answer now. LOL

My son has a CB radio and is needing to get a antenna for the home unit.?
I need to know what is best kind to get. I check on them and there are so many and cost very greatly. He has a CB in his car but I would like to talk to him from home so we got a 40 chan, USB LSB AM radio and would like as much range as possableMy son has a CB radio and is needing to get a antenna for the home unit.?
I am a license Armature radio operator of 12 years.
For A CB radio you don't need a license and if you set up a decent station you can get as much as 30 miles from it. You can get more if you go with directional antenna called "Beams. You don't have to get a tower but with the 27 MHz freq you will be in need at least 20 feet from the ground to the base of the antenna. But you relay should get up to 36 feet high even if you use a unidirectional antenna. 36 feet is one wave length at 27 MHz and you will get far better range on transmit as well as listing. My son has a CB radio and is needing to get a antenna for the home unit.?
Regardless of the antenna type: the higher off the ground - the better. In the end it comes down to what is practical for your circumstances.
For CB base stations wanting to talk to mobile stations, an omni-directional ground-plane vertical antenna is most practical and also most common.
I would suggest a 5/8 wave vertical over a 1/2 wave. 5/8 wave gives a lower angle of radiation, which is best for maximizing your "line of sight" radiation angle.
Invest in a SWR power meter too, if possible. Follow the antenna manufacturers instructions on "tuning" the antenna for lowest SWR (standing wave ratio). 1:1 is ideal. 1.5:1 is OK. Anything higher is wasting power being reflected from antenna back to transmitter. SWR of 1:1 means all your forward power is being "radiated" from the antenna. This is very important for maximizing antenna transmission performance.... regardless of antenna type you buy.
Also, use the SWR meter to tune your sons mobile radio antenna too for maximum performance. It will pay-off in performance and troubleshooting problems.sprinter google crome

Where can I find a Galaxy CB Radio with a antena/amplifier on the back?
I am looking for a CB radio for my truck and I know they make them. It is the Galaxy 959 model but I am looking for a model with a antena and/or amp on the back, I think it's like a yellow circle of a sort. They relativly more expensive, but I am willing to pay. If anyone can find a reliabale source to buy from, please post a link for me. ThanksWhere can I find a Galaxy CB Radio with a antena/amplifier on the back?
''or amp on the back - - but I am willing to pay.''
That is a very good attitude to have , because when you are found to be using this illegal radio you will most certainly will be paying , , paying a lot more than you realise.Where can I find a Galaxy CB Radio with a antena/amplifier on the back?
There reallly is only one model of that type radio. They use an antenna mounted to the body of your vehicle, and are legally limited to 4 watts input power. There is no such thing as a built in antena for a mobile radio, nor any "amplifier" or radio legally built to work more than the legal limit.

What brand of CB is a good basic unit for listening and taliking to truckers whilst travelling ? What is considered to be more popular an AM CB or a UHF CB radio in Australia ??What to buy in the way of a CB radio for travelling ?
You're in australia, UHF's are more popular with truckers and everyone else for that matter, they use channel 40..
I've used Unidens (from Dick Smiths) and found them to be good, never had a problem. They are probably at the cheaper end of the market, brands like Icom and GME are more expensive.
Handheld units have range of only 1 or 2 kms, advantage being portability. Vehicle units will do 10kms easily, and much further in flat country. Using repeaters will increase this heaps, but will have to deal with lots of idiots. If you are putting it in your car, aerial size and type, and proper mounting and instalation is more important than the unit.
If you are going outback i would speak with a specialist radio store as you will need something with much better range. Or a satelite phone.
Happy CBing, and i might catch you on the air good buddy.
Oh, and go and hire smokey and the bandit and convoy for some classic CB movies and to get the lingo.. Aah to have been alive when CB's were cool...What to buy in the way of a CB radio for travelling ?

When it comes to the brand I stand by my past experiences. I perfer the COBRA. There are many options and their available world wide.

I have a 2005 f150 king ranch. I had a cb radio and took it out. To mount it i had to drill holes for the screws. it was mounted to the right of the steering wheel close to where my legs would be. If somebody had to fix holes in their car before would you please help me!!!!!!How do i fix screw holes in my dash where my cb radio was?
you could just leave the screws in or fill the holes with jb weld or clear silicone sealer. How do i fix screw holes in my dash where my cb radio was?
some of the auto parts stores sell a plastic and vinyl repair kit that will help color match it pretty well just follow the directions. or you can use bondo and get some plastic and vinyl paint and repaint.

What can I do about my neighbors CB radio comming over my speakers?
There is a person in my neighborhood that has a tall CB radio type tower in his back yard. A metal tower about 20 ft. tall. I can hear him through all the speakers in my home when he talks on it (which is sometimes at 4 or 5 in the morning). Is there some kind of law against this? Is there anything I can do? I tried to ask him about it but he acted like a jerk. We live in a subdivision just outside of the city. What can I do about my neighbors CB radio comming over my speakers?
That's not a CB (citizens band) radio, but rather a HAM radio antenna. And technically, they are required by law to have the proper filters in place so that they don't interfere with their neighbors' radio or TV reception. And if it's affecting your reception it's probably also messing with a lot of your neighbor's too.
But I don't know who you complain to. I guess start with the police department and local government agencies. Check out the FCC web site - they might have information on that.
Years ago I lived next to a guy who had a GI-NORMOUS radio antenna in his back yard - directly ourside of our otherwise great kitchen view. He didn't even have a radio anymore, but was keeping the eyesore of an antenna just in case he wanted to get back into it some day. Arg!
Good luck.
hahahaha he owns you!!! buy a new stereo, do not use fm or am, use cd's or mp3's.
And yes am pretty sure its illegal to interfere others people electronics in such a way. What can I do about my neighbors CB radio comming over my speakers?
Usually it is the receiving person's responsibility to put a filter on their electronics, I think.
You may be able to solve this with a snap-on ring of
ferrite material available at Radio Shack stores: you
open the ring, wind as many turns of the speaker cable
through the ring as possible, then put it back together.
Do this as close to the speaker end of the cable as
possible. Or try using unamplified speakers. It is
unfortunate that these problems can, in most cases, be
solved with the addition of an extra 5 cents worth of
parts during manufacture. (A skilled person may be
able to modify such equipment to make it more robust
and less prone to interference, but I am assuming that
you wouldn't undertake such modifications, and I doubt
you would trust your neighbor to do so, either.)What can I do about my neighbors CB radio comming over my speakers?
Put your speakers outside, point them at their house, turn your stereo on, and sit back. Maybe they'll stop talking after they hear themselves...along with the rest of the neighborhood.
A HAM radio is a Class B radio: it is required to accept whatever interference is caused by Class A radios (a TV is a class A device), and it must not interefere with reception by Class A receivers. Violation results in revocation of the license. If that's not enough, unlicensed broadcasting that causes interference is a federal crime. Just because there's no zoning does not make him legal.
You will want to complain to the Spectrum Enforcement Division. Amateur radio complaints should be as specific as possible, citing dates, times, and frequencies on which alleged violations occurred. Complaints should also include a name and telephone number where the complainant can be reached for further details, if necessary. Complaints should be sent via e-mail to fccham@fcc.gov or by mail to the address to the Bureau. Parties are encouraged to send standard cassette recordings or CDs in support of their complaints. Recordings should be mailed to: Federal Communications Commission, Enforcement Bureau, Amateur Radio, 1270 Fairfield Road, Gettysburg, PA 17325. Parties desiring further information may call: (717) 338-2502.
You can contact the FCC and make them aware of the problem. They'll get back to you in 5 years or so. Try any of the electronics retailers in your area and explain your problem. They should be able to guide you to the appropriate filters to keep the chatterbox off of your speakers.
Otherwise use poster aboves suggestion ...but don't get caught.
Good luck.
You should be able to check with the Police Department and ask them about disturbing the peace - your peace, and see what they suggest, they would be able to give you someone to call!

What is a good CB radio for my car?
I am looking to purchase a decent CB radio for my car. I only want to spend about $100 all said and done, maybe a bit more. I have looked around and like Cobra a lot, but I'm not sure which model or what antenna to get with it.What is a good CB radio for my car?
ok, so you want a decent CB, believe it or not Cobra is probably one of the best CB's on the market for the price.
A Cobra 29LTD will run about $80usd, but you can find them at most truck stops across America. Once these are tweaked and peaked you can really get out and with the right antenna and kicker can talk across America, coast to coast. But it will cost you more than $100usd to get this type of setup, average is about $500usd properly set up. Give or take a little.
A Midland can be had at about $40usd and you can find them at any Wal-Mart or Radio Shack and are good for talking around town, especially if you get a good antenna and a small kicker.
Next is your antenna, a K-40 or Wilson are 2 of the better magnet mount, but if you really want to talk, a set of FireSticks or similar type will help out once you tune them to your radio.
Good luck and hope to hear you on the waves sometime.

How can I hook up my CB radio to fuse box or battery?
I bought a CB radio today and I want to know how to exactly hook it up. I have a 2003 GMC sierra 1500 ext. cab. Where do I hook it up to go to the fuse thing? or how can I run the wire through the firewall to the battery and then how do I hook it up? lastly, where is a good place to mount the antenna and run the cord back inside the cab?How can I hook up my CB radio to fuse box or battery?
Instead of the fuse box you can get the cigarette lighter plug from Radio Shack.
If you prefer to run it to the battery you can either drill your own hole or you can use an existing factory penetration.
As for the antenna and coax, I'd get the Wilson 1000 or K40 Magnet mount and either drill a hole to run the coax or through the sliding rear window as stated above. If you drill a hole make sure its big enough to use a grommet to protect the cable and prevent water from getting in your cab. Cut the fitting off the coax(so you don't have to drill such a large hole) and run it through hole and grommet then after you have everything in place you solder a new fitting on the end.

go to radio shack and buy the end that plugs into the cigarette lighter so that way you can remove it when you want instead of hard wiring it in How can I hook up my CB radio to fuse box or battery?
ouch.... thats a lot of questions... but the basic most......
my recommendations are to hardwire it to the battery, with an inline fuse.
if you want to go through the firewall... easiest way is to drill your own hole and get a rubber gromet. but i can understand not wanting to drill into that beauty. so what you can do is run the wires down under the dash and all that. out the passenger door near the floor, up through the fender and out right next to the battery. like i said make sure you fuse it with an inline fuse a 3 or 4 amp inline fuse will do the trick. The black ground wire can go pretty much anywhere that is grounded.... you can figure that one out i am sure.
when it come to antenna their is a lot of things happening here.. but you pretty much want it as high as possible and not next to parts of the truck that will refelect the signal back towards the antenna. so mounting in on the roof would be your best bet, right in the center or back of the cab. also it wont get in the way of you using the bed.
how to run the wire.... you have to run it so it wont get pinched.... you dont want that wire pinched... or stripped or anything. so with out looking at the truck i cant really tell you that, i know some people who send it in the back window. and leave it cracked, or get a rubber weather stripping that will attatch to the window. if you have rain guards and back windows you can run it through the back windows, if you want you can run it down through the center of the cab and bed, and bring it in the bottom of the door and make sure its not pinched.
also when you install an antenna it needs to be tuned (weather or not it says factory tuned) if your CB has an SWR meter thats great. if not you may need to borrow, or rent one from your fav. radio shack. ... or least fav. directions come with them, but google also has many answers on how to tune an antenna.

Will a handheld CB radio work as a police scanner?
Will a handheld CB radio work as a police scanner, and if so, how far will it pick up?Will a handheld CB radio work as a police scanner?
In a word, no.
A CB radio operates in the 27mhz band. Most police are operating in the 150 or 450mhz bands, a few in 800mhz and a few in the 30-40mhz bands.
It would be impractical to modify the CB for these frequencies, it would basically require a total redesign but I suppose you could maybe get it to go into the low 30mhz range but I doubt there would be much there.
Then there is another Huge obstacle. The CB operates using AM modulation, the police will be using FM modulation. Even if you could tune in the right frequency, you wouldnt be able to hear them.
Trade the CB for a scanner. Will a handheld CB radio work as a police scanner?
its not going to work, but for the price of a decent radio, you just need a little b it more and youll get a better scanner. The other dude is right on... A Scanner is much more practice, because... it scans...

Cb radio turning off when squelch is adjusted?
I have a cobra handheld cb radio, 40 chanel and There are fresh non-rechargable batteries in it. It works fine and has power when the squelch is all the way up, but when i turn the squelch knob down (clockwise) just the slightest bit, the display turns off and I can't hear anything.
Anyone know what is happening?Cb radio turning off when squelch is adjusted?
yes.
that is the purpose of the squelch button - it 'squelches' the sound of speaker until a signal is received.
when a signal is received, then the sound comes back on and your display lights back up.
this is also a battery save function

Is a stock cobra cb radio mic really poor quality?
Ive got a couple questions:
1. is a stock cobra cb mic poor quality?
2. when i talk into my cb radio, my bars light up to indicate im talking but dont go away when i try to stop talking and let go of the mic....whats the problem? Is a stock cobra cb radio mic really poor quality?
1. The stock Cobra mics do fine. I have one on one of my radios and it does just fine. Any stock mic will be good for general use, unless you just want to customize your rig.
2. Either you've got some interference or if it is still showing TX then you may have a short. Is a stock cobra cb radio mic really poor quality?
Yeah, the mic is pretty cheap. Many truckers will upgrade to a noise canceling mic for a better sound. A power mic is fine for base station operation, but picks up too much road noise for mobile use.
The signal indicator bars serve two functions. They indicate transmit power when broadcasting, and signal strength in receive. When you let go of the mic, the number of bars lit up should decrease, but not all will go out.Is a stock cobra cb radio mic really poor quality?
The Cobra stock mic's are okay mic's. The reason they are less than quality is because if Cobra invested real $$ into their mic's, the whole CB price would go up. You can buy better mic's, but I like the Cobra stock mic myself. I have run the Astatic's, and the RK56's, but you know what, people will be able to understand you no matter what you talking into.
The bars on your radio: Possible heavy noise.... Some times AM transmissions will pick up power line or engine noise... some tricks can be done to correct these problems. For a real solution to noise, ground the radio, to your car's chassie. Your noise will be less, and you'll hear more people, than most guys can.jdm book clubs

How much electricity can a cb radio consum?
My sister spends a lot of time talking over a cb that she brought to my house. It's a huge antena with a base unit and power suply that rivals the local radio station..!!! I've seen my electric bill soar.. but i can't be sure it's her toy... How much electricity does one of those things consum? How much electricity can a cb radio consum?
They are 12 volts, something else is going on
If she is running legal input power the size of the antenna doesn't matter. The size of the power supply doesn't either.
It may be a co- incidence. Maybe the power company snuck up your rates or she is taking too many showers. The CB is probably only using something less than 100 watts. How much electricity can a cb radio consum?

Consum, what is consum? I have never heard of that word. I have, however, heard of "consume". Now if that is what you want to know, a LEGAL CB station is only going to draw about 15 to 20 watts. If she is smart, she has a legal one. If she isn't, I would advise you to put her off the air, pronto, or make her reduce to the legal 5 watts. While the FCC is generally not going to prosecute anyone running 100 watts or less, if there are complaints, that could bring them looking, and then the show is over, and you would be held as an accomplice. That is a very bad show and one that you do not want to be in. If her rig is causing interference with other peoples radios ot TV or anything else, and as stated the FCC comes looking, it is very bad news.
The size of the antenna is meaningless. It only radiates energy, it does not draw it in any way.How much electricity can a cb radio consum?
Are you sure that it's a CB radio (11 meters), or is it maybe a Ham Radio station (10, 20, 40, 80 meters). Ham radio use large antennas and put out a lot of RF power, drawing a lot of household AC current from the line.

How do I stop neighbours CB Radio from bleading through my computer speakers?
The guy next door has this giant antena in his back yard for his his CB Radio. He uses it alot and I can hear him very well through my computer speakers. It scares my 1 year old and annoys the crap out of me. What can I do?How do I stop neighbours CB Radio from bleading through my computer speakers?
Unfortunately...there's not much you can do with computer speakers...they are fairly cheap electronics and they are VERY poorly shielded.....the best thing to stop CB (RF) interference is a high pass filter...unfortunately....these are for TV antennas.
The best bet would be to talk with your neighbor and ask him to ground his antenna (he will know what this means) with the grounding spikes and coils, turn down his modulation (this is the most common cause of interference) and not use an ILLEGAL amplifier on CB. If he is a license Ham operator, he would already know and have done this and unfortunately, Ham operators due have the law behind them with power. How do I stop neighbours CB Radio from bleading through my computer speakers?
you can't stop him , just politely tell him about it

Consider buying a better set of speakers. If all the problem is just your computer speakers, then a set with better filtering will correct the problem. My wife's computer has the same problem... Mine, with better speakers, does not.

Is a cb radio legal on a passenger vehicle in Colorado?
I have a Midland 1001Z CB radio installed on my 2001 Ford Taurus SE, and I just want to make sure its legal to be using my CB radio in Colorado. Is a cb radio legal on a passenger vehicle in Colorado?
CB is a citizen band radio frequency and has been open to unlicensed public use for many years now. As long as it is not modified to put out more than 4Watts you are fine.

How can I get my CB radio to work?
My CB Radio is always displaying a S.W.R of 4.0!!!
It is driving my nuts because I don't know how to fix this, and allot of people have told me that I can damage my radio if I use it when It's broken in this particular way.How can I get my CB radio to work?
First, make sure that you are using the SWR meter properly. Then check all coaxial cable connectors to make sure the are seated and screwed on properly. Inspect every inch of coaxial cable to make sure there aren't any breaks, tears, or kinks. Then check your grounding. Also you should be able to raise/lower or trim your antenna to match to the frequency. Any SWR reading above 2.0 can damage your radio. How can I get my CB radio to work?
You should have a reading of 1.5 or lower, you may need to trim the bottom of the antenna where it goes in the mounting, you could also have a bad groung or coaxial cable, your best bet would be to find a CB shop where you live. If you don't get the SWR, Standing Wave Ratio down, yes you will ruin your radioHow can I get my CB radio to work?
It is possible to damage it running it like that. I suspect antenna or antenna cable damage.

Should I hookup my car's CB radio with a cigarette lighter adapter or hard wire to battery or fuse?
Will either of these setups give me more power and are there any disadvantages or problems with hooking up my CB Radio to a cigarette lighter plug and using it that way?Should I hookup my car's CB radio with a cigarette lighter adapter or hard wire to battery or fuse?
Actually, it could make a difference in noise interference. It is always advisable to run power directly to the battery, if possible. Also, if your radio is peaked up at all it should perform better with a direct power connection than what a cigarette lighter will be able to provide. While both will provide approx. 12 volts, the amperage will vary between what the cigarette lighter will be able to carry and what you can get directly from the battery, therefore impeding the performance output of the radio.Should I hookup my car's CB radio with a cigarette lighter adapter or hard wire to battery or fuse?
unless your CB has been tricked for high power, it should work just fine in the lighter. that is how my is, and that allows it to be easily used in either of my cars. many cars have the lighter work with the key so that it will shut off the radio when the engine is off. for this reason, going to the fuse box is better than battery direct, if you pick a fuse terminal that has power from the key (such as the radio circuit).Should I hookup my car's CB radio with a cigarette lighter adapter or hard wire to battery or fuse?
It shouldn't. No real reason it should. Only disadvantage is you could leave it on and drain the bartterytraffic school kbb used car value

Do I need an antenna for my CB radio to get reception?
Ive got a couple questions:
1. Do I need an antenna for my CB radio to get reception?
2. Can you get reception if you keep the antenna in the car?
Thanks.Do I need an antenna for my CB radio to get reception?
Yes, you need an antenna.
If you leave the antenna inside the car, the transmit and receive capabilities will be greatly reduced, but it will work.
Mounting the antenna outside on the metal body shapes the radio wave form during transmit, but does essentially nothing for reception.
I ran my antenna inside my trunk for awhile, and while the SWR was 2.5:1, I could hear truckers from about 1 mile away.
A CB antenna is required if you would like to hear almost anything on the CB freq's. A normal CB antenna that has fair performance runs about $15-20 at any truck stop or CB shop. Normally you can get a cell phone look alike antenna or even buy a tuner box, that will allow you to use your car's AM/FM radio antenna as a CB antenna.
Antenna's in the car. I have herd of ham radio op's having small antenna's in their trunks, as to not ruin the look of their Corvette, or Jag, but CB antenna's are normally much taller, and to have an antenna in the trunk is unwise.
If your worried about someone breaking into your car to get your CB, because they see the antenna, do what I do when I'm in a shifty place or park in a hotel parking lot. Put the antenna in your trunk, and take your radio in with you, you'll sleep better at night.Do I need an antenna for my CB radio to get reception?
Yes you need them.
Antenna is like the speaker and microphone. Without it you can't get any signal out of the CB.

No CB radio waves are very long. I will not get out of the metal body.
good Luck...
yes you need a CB antenna, no you can't get reception with the antenna in the car. the CB antenna needs to be mounted.Do I need an antenna for my CB radio to get reception?
Yes you need an antennae and the antennae acts as a ground to complete the circuit...thats why it needs to be in contact with the outer part of your vehicle...

Anybody know about a cheap power source for a CB radio?
I have recently bought a CB radio but i don't want to install it in my car or buy a portable hand held one. All i need is a power source but all of the ones that i found are too expensive. Does anybody know a cheap power source for it.Anybody know about a cheap power source for a CB radio?
Radio Shack has 13.8 volt power supplies - you will need one that can supply at least 5 amps:

Sorry, none of them are cheap.
Computer power supply from an old PC.Anybody know about a cheap power source for a CB radio?
if it uses ac you might try a power inverter to convert 12 volt to 120.
Walcott CB Sales has a web site that may help you. Are you wanting to walk around with this or use in home. The reason I ask is your antenna is going to be the next thing to figure out. There are different styles for the application you will use.Anybody know about a cheap power source for a CB radio?
What i did for one of my radios is shop around at different thrift stores and found a AC/DC transformer w/ 12 volts, 2 amps. If you don't want to have to wait until you find something by chance like that, you will just have to pick one up at RadioShack. They've got the necessary power supplies, they're just a little more expensive.

that model is a digital hand held cb. It uses a PLL chip for the frequencies. There is no crystal that you need to change.
@lare Actually, there are repairable and changeable parts in a cb. Lots of them. You are correct though that any work or modification needs to be done by a lisecensed tech or the cb becomes invalid for warranty or repair from the manufacturerHow do I open up a Midland 75-785 CB Radio?
