What to buy in the way of a CB radio for travelling ?

What brand of CB is a good basic unit for listening and taliking to truckers whilst travelling ? What is considered to be more popular an AM CB or a UHF CB radio in Australia ??What to buy in the way of a CB radio for travelling ?
You're in australia, UHF's are more popular with truckers and everyone else for that matter, they use channel 40..

I've used Unidens (from Dick Smiths) and found them to be good, never had a problem. They are probably at the cheaper end of the market, brands like Icom and GME are more expensive.

Handheld units have range of only 1 or 2 kms, advantage being portability. Vehicle units will do 10kms easily, and much further in flat country. Using repeaters will increase this heaps, but will have to deal with lots of idiots. If you are putting it in your car, aerial size and type, and proper mounting and instalation is more important than the unit.

If you are going outback i would speak with a specialist radio store as you will need something with much better range. Or a satelite phone.

Happy CBing, and i might catch you on the air good buddy.

Oh, and go and hire smokey and the bandit and convoy for some classic CB movies and to get the lingo.. Aah to have been alive when CB's were cool...What to buy in the way of a CB radio for travelling ?
