How do I know if my gas gauge is off on my 2002 Acura RSX S.What do I need to do to fix it?

I got the car and every time its on almost empty (the light turns on and off about 3 times before I fill up) It only allows me to fill up up to 10.4 or so gallons and the niddle on the gauge doest go all the way to the full mark. What can be the problem? And how much would it cost to repair? How do I know if my gas gauge is off on my 2002 Acura RSX S.What do I need to do to fix it?
Pull the fuel gauge sending unit out of the gas tank and hold the float lever all the way up with the ignition in the on position. If the gauge reads no higher than half way the sending unit needs replacing. Gauges rarely are the problem. To check the gauge you need to ground the hot wire for the sending unit at the connector for the sending unit. That should put the gauge to full. Make sure you have the right wire, one will be for the pump. How do I know if my gas gauge is off on my 2002 Acura RSX S.What do I need to do to fix it?
The adjustment on the rheostat of your sender sounds like it's probably off. Might need a new one, or it could be the arm got bent somehow, if somebody replaced it, or they were off in the first place. $19 at autozone, not sure of labor. There are tests to make sure if that's it first.

Edit; Yeah, what thebax2006 said for tests. Easier to check the gauge first. Just make sure you know which wire it is.How do I know if my gas gauge is off on my 2002 Acura RSX S.What do I need to do to fix it?
Its probably the sending unit in the gas tank. Pump with fuel level module is about $200 from parts train. Its in the fuel tank
